Tony Conrad - Gentle Virtuoso

Back in November of last year we were lucky enough to meet Tony Conrad and to watch him perform in the gallery. It was very cold in November and we were more than a little worried that the man might freeze; I found it very odd to be in the supermarket buying popcorn and olives for the man responsible for naming The Velvet Underground, 'The Velvet Underground'.
Tony Conrad is a delightful man and arrived in a boiler suit and a wind cheater, grinning, worried that I might be too cold and searching for a big white light to halo his performance. We found one and arranged cafe tables and sofas in the gallery to make a performance space akin to a jazz club within a deep freeze.

The performance was beguiling and moving. A crescendo of monotony that i would have liked to continue long after the hour long performance. This was one of those evenings at the Fishmarket that we could not quite believe was happening, but were damn glad about it.

Tony Conrad's influential oeuvre as an avant garde musician and film maker has just been celebrated by Tate Modern in a short season of old and new work. I hope that people went and were lucky enough to spend an hour or two with the man.

"Tony Conrad is a pivotal figure in contemporary culture. His multi-faceted contributions since the 1960s have influenced and redefined music, filmmaking, minimalism, performance, video and conceptual art.

Known for his groundbreaking film 'The Flicker', his involvement in the Theatre of Eternal Music and the evolution of the Velvet Underground, and collaborations with a host of luminaries including Jack Smith, John Cale, Mike Kelley and Henry Flynt, Conrad remains a radical figure who challenges our understanding of art history."

First Timers/Old Timers

For those that do, sit tight for the new info. For those that don't, read on...

For a little over 18 months things have been shifting, billowing smoke and emitting low rumbling noise and the odd jazz trumpet over at the once cherished but sadly abandoned market building in Northampton Town. For a great deal of people the mere mention of Northampton prompts blank looks and vitriol (I know, I've done it) but I'm happy to say that there is now more than a little in this odd town to cheer, elate, placate and terrify... all in a very good way and oftentimes, all at once.

Back in 2006, after much heartfelt wrangling, the Northampton Arts Collective got out of the pub and into The Fishmarket. The NAC were a band of like minded artists and advocates devoted to making positive cultural changes in a barren Midlands town, The Fishmarket was a gigantic and beautiful building with all kinds of leaks, hidden rifle ranges and possibilities.

Thankfully, due to various kinds of support, The Fishmarket has slightly less leaks and has been transformed thusly...

Before (2006)

After (2008)

Good eh?
Since then we have existed in sub zero temperatures with the occasional blindingly bright spell thanks to a plethora of wonderful artists, musicians, writers, designer makers, local heroes and new friends. The Fishmarket's mission is to create a contemporary arts space of national significance for Northampton over the next two years. We also support independent retail, general oddball arts activity, community projects and (above all) the new, the unusual and the brave. I'm not ashamed to say that it's going well so far.

In this space I will post all the things we cannot yet fit on to the website. And more to boot.
